Terri who?

Pay attention.

There is a concentrated and obvious effort out there to make people forget about the horrific execution that was handed down to Terri Schiavo, the seriously brain-damaged woman from Tampa Bay.

Granted, while the death of John Paul II was big news, it was amazing how that death was covered ad nauseum for more than a week, while the greatest abuse of our system of powers went unchecked.

Terri has died. Read the facts: Michael Schiavo was on no mission of mercy. The fact that the "Death with Dignity" people got behind his Nazi-like execution is unbelievably hypocritical. How much dignity do you get by dying from starvation and lack of water? We've heard it all before: Hitler called these "mercy killings." Sounds like a synonym to me.

The greater, more disturbing thing here is that the government has made a clear statement regarding severely brain-damaged persons: We know what the ideal quality of life is, and if you're not meeting it, your days are numbered.

Where do we go from here? In this society that rampantly accepts Darwinism as fact, does that mean we will eventually institute an Orwellian/Nazi/Fascist system whereby those deemed "invalids" will be starved to death in order to preserve a certain quality of life? Our country really needs to look at its soul.

I do disagree with my Christian bretheren in that the executive branch did not do enough. On the contrary, the precious separation of powers kept them from interefering, and for good reason. If the Bush brothers had intervened, that would have set a dangerous precedent; governors or presidents would be able to overturn any court decision they didn't agree with. That's scary... I wouldn't want my religious freedoms or my freedom of speech or any of that revoked (more than they already have) because the executive didn't like a court ruling.

It's unfortunate things happened this way... and I think we need to continue to put pressure on lawmakers to make sure something is done, and the we NEVER forget. Something... some law or whatever must be created to require people to put their wishes regarding "pulling the plug" on their driver's licenses, just above the organ donor section. I mean, we put on there if we want our guts harvested, why not this, which is so much more crucial?

It just seems that the media has moved on, and so has the collective ADD conscience of the American public. Why is it that we pick our "pet causes" to rally behind on Monday, only to have changed our focus by Wednesday? We need to have patience and boldness to stick out the fight and speak out for truth and justice.

I'm sure everyone now is waiting to see who's going to be Pope JP3... (personally, I think this person will be a bit of a spiritual troublemaker for evangelicals) ... or are you just waiting for the next American Idol? Don't get complacent. Don't get plugged back in. ::MH::

Erica's got some good points... but I can't help but look at the video of Terri (go to www.terrisfight.org) and think she's more than just "mechanically alive." I agree that in extraordinary circumstances we shouldn't prolong lives that require LIFE SUPPORT (as it's truly definied, specifically, respirators, and other machines that take the place of vital organs). But Terri wasn't on life support: she was simply DENIED nourishment! Again I ask: shouldn't she have just been euthanized? This is a rhetorical question because I don't agree with either approach, but c'mon! Doctors have clearly had varied reports, since some doctors testified that Terri could have received food by mouth! Check out the video and see for yourself what an atrophied medulla can do... Love ya, Hairy, you know it!
